Michigan has begun construction on a $4.4 million state-run cannabis testing lab, but legal barriers prevent it from fully operating. The Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) lacks the authority to collect and test more than 2.5 ounces of marijuana under the state's 2018 voter-approved law. Without a three-fourths majority vote in the Legislature to amend the constitution, the CRA cannot oversee cannabis testing independently. This legal roadblock leaves the state reliant on private labs and raises concerns about regulatory oversight. Industry stakeholders are pushing for legislative action to grant the CRA full operational authority.
