Small businesses, retailers, and consumption lounges are now allowed to apply for business licenses for adult-use weed after a long wait. The window for license applications was open from September 1 until October 1.
As the most populous town in the State of Michigan Detroit will issue over 160 licenses through 3 stages.
The first phase of adult-use weed licenses:
Ten-for-consumption lounges
Forty for retailers
Ten for micro businesses (these businesses are allowed to proceed with vertical integration and have the capacity to grow 150 weed plants)
The second phase for adult-use weed licenses:
Ten for micro businesses
Thirty for retailers
Ten-for-consumption lounges
The third phase for adult-use weed licenses:
Ten-for-consumption lounges
Thirty for retailers
Ten for micro businesses
It is estimated that stating equal rights for Detroit residents to take part in the marijuana business will bring revenue of more than $3 billion per year by 2024.
The City Council president Pro Tem James Tate states that admitting submissions for adult-use marijuana business licensures was a very prolonged process. It dates back to 2020. Fortunately, now the Detroit city residents who qualify for the social equality program are allowed to issue a license for weed businesses. Moreover, the Social equality program is foreseen to promote the submissions of those participants who the cannabis ban has somehow impacted.
Though Michigan launched a recreational marijuana market in 2019, Detroit banned sales throughout the city territory. This is because the Detroit City Council was engaged in implementing social equity program meanwhile struggling against the rising illegal market.
So, after a long delay, Detroit Council presented a new plan in February. Then this proposal passed through the voting process and get approved in April. After a few months licensing eventually resumed.
